Ivor Macfarlane started work for UK government in 1976, in a range of jobs and departments, from forestry to prisons. Getting into IT accidentally in 1985 he ran a small IT unit delivering a warehousing solution – learning some COBOL programming and computer operations along the way before joining CCTA and helping write the original ITIL books and develop the first ITIL training course. Becoming a freelance trainer and consultant in 1999, he is recognised as a best practice author – several ITIL versions, ISO2000 and more – and frequent conference presenter: at well over 100 conferences across 42 countries as well as delivering training in 24 countries. Now semi-retired he focuses on work that is interesting and fun – and that mostly means training in subjects he is passionate about, especially Devops, and he remains hopeful about increasing those country counts a little more yet.
