New edition of MSP certification - What are the key changes?

The 5th edition of Managing Successful Programs (MSP®) was launched in 2021. For those familiar with the previous versions of MSP, especially the one from 2011, the question arises:

How does this new version differ from the previous ones?

The core concepts from the previous version – principles, themes and processes – still form the basic structure of the guide. Some elements from the 2011 edition have been clearly carried forward into the 5th edition, including:

  • Vision: The purpose and characteristics of a robust vision statement.
  • Benefits: This remains a core MSP principle and is a common thread throughout the guide.
  • Risks: These are addressed throughout instead of just in one place.
  • Blueprint: Now renamed to “target operating model” and further explanation of its use has been added.

These four key elements – vision, benefits, risks and target operating model – are now all integrated into the design theme within the new version of MSP, emphasizing the integrated nature of the program.

Other key areas from MSP 4th edition that remain in the new one include:

  • Organizational structure and roles: Familiar roles such as senior responsible owner, program manager, business change manager, sponsor group, program board and program office are retained and their importance strengthened. Other roles are also addressed appropriately.
  • Business case: Its link to benefits, funding and financial planning is explored in the Justification theme.
  • Stakeholder engagement and communication planning: This aspect has been updated and renewed.
  • Program Lifecycle: Formerly known as “Transformational Flow”, this has been updated to highlight the incremental nature of the program and ensure progressive delivery of beneficial results.

The overall structure of principles, themes and program lifecycle remains the foundation of the MSP integrated framework:

  • The MSP Principles: They have been revised and adapted to today’s environment, although they continue to be described as universal, self-affirming and powerful. The principles emphasize the most critical areas for program management success.
  • The MSP themes: The number of themes has been reduced to seven from the previous nine, and they are now referred to as themes rather than governance themes. This contributes to a clearer understanding of each theme’s contribution and purpose.
  • MSP Program Lifecycle: The lifecycle now includes seven processes that describe program management from start to finish, focusing on alignment and progression towards the desired future outcome.

In each of the seven thematic chapters, four fictional scenarios are introduced that illustrate the application of MSP in different program contexts based on drivers such as innovation and growth, organizational restructuring and efficient delivery.

In summary, the heart of a program remains unchanged – it is time-bound, benefits-focused, and deals with managing multiple projects and other work. MSP has long been an excellent source of guidance and inspiration for managing complex change, and the 5th edition continues to offer insights into the leading thinking around program management.
