What is ISO 9001?
First introduced in 1987, ISO 9001 is the pioneering international management system standard (MSS) that outlines the essential criteria for developing, implementing, operating, maintaining, and continuously improving a quality management system (QMS) within an organization. Built on seven key quality management principles, ISO 9001 is designed to enhance organizational efficiency and boost customer satisfaction. A common misconception is that this standard is only relevant to large corporations and manufacturers. However, its requirements are universally applicable to organizations of all types and sizes, regardless of the nature of their products or services. Since its initial release, ISO 9001 has undergone multiple revisions to align with evolving best practices and business trends, ensuring its continued relevance.
The most recent (5th) edition, known as ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems – Requirements, remains in effect. Following a survey of over 8,000 respondents, the ISO subcommittee for quality systems (ISO/TC 176/SC 2) confirmed in May 2021 that ISO 9001:2015 remains relevant and recommended no changes to the standard.
