AgilePM Foundation

Reach your goal with flexible project management

AgilePM® Foundation is an agile framework that ensures a consistent process with an ideal balance between control and flexibility. AgilePM® is particularly well suited for product development.

You will learn

  • How to lay the foundation for successful agile projects.
  • About what different management styles are required for agile projects to be successful.
  • How an agile project is handled and the principles of AgilePM.
  • About the different roles and responsibilities in the project.
  • Insight into techniques for managing e.g. time and quality.
  • The role you have in the project and what it requires of you.

Introduction to Agile PM Foundation

AgilePM Foundation (Agile Project Management Foundation) has the same basic principles as other agile training programs including Scrum, Safe and PRINCE2 Agile. Agile project management is about managing projects according to a method that is based on the customer’s definition of value. Through iterations, a project-product (service, product or solution) is created with characteristics that correspond to the customer’s expectations. Together with Scrum, AgilePM is an alternative to traditional progression-based project management. AgilePM is managed through iterations (repetitions of management processes). This creates transparency and better opportunities to act appropriately in relation to sudden reprioritization or other changes in the business environment.

AgilePM Foundation is the oldest agile framework that has been refined over the past 25 years. The methodology is well described in the accompanying manual, which explains in detail the organisation and content of the methodology. AgilePM is particularly well suited for the development of physical products or features. AgilePM makes use of prototyping, which is built into the well-documented phase model.

The AgilePM Foundation certification combines Agile approaches widely used in the software development industry with project management techniques to produce the best of both worlds: a framework for projects that are rigorous and controllable, yet able to adapt quickly to change. Our agile courses include exams and are fully accredited by APMG International.

The main difference between Scrum and AgilePM is on the organization part. In AgilePM you work with many different roles including Business Analyst, which means that there is a very clear role and responsibility descriptions.

The DSDM consortium has developed AgilePM foundation (and practitioner), the last new version, v3, was launched in 2024. The manual is of high quality with many good illustrations. The structure of the manual and our e-learning are similar.

The purpose of the course
  • Explaining how to lay the foundation for successful agile projects.
  • Explanation of how an agile project is managed.
  • Clarification of the different management styles required for agile projects in order to be successful (compared to traditional projects).

Why choose AgilePM over traditional project management?

AgilePM allows for quick adaptation to changes, higher transparency, and continuous value creation through iterations, which is ideal in complex and volatile business environments.

Why is AgilePM particularly suited for product development?

AgilePM uses prototyping and has a well-documented phase model, which is particularly beneficial when developing physical products or complex software solutions where continuous product verification with the customer is desired.

What 8 principles is AgilePM based on?

AgilePM is based on 8 key principles, including focusing on business needs, delivering on time, collaboration, uncompromising quality, basing decisions on facts, building iteratively, communicating clearly and openly, and demonstrating control.

Which version of AgilePM is taught?

Mentorix teaches the latest version of AgilePM, which is v3, launched by the DSDM Consortium in 2024.

How does AgilePM relate to PRINCE2 Agile?

AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile share fundamental agile principles. AgilePM is a standalone framework, while PRINCE2 Agile is an adaptation of the PRINCE2 method for agile environments. They can complement each other.

What does it mean that AgilePM is a ‘framework’?

A framework provides you with a structured set of principles, processes, roles, and tools that should be tailored and used flexibly to manage a project effectively.

What is MoSCoW prioritization?

MoSCoW is a prioritization technique used in AgilePM to classify requirements as Must have, Should have, Could have, and Won’t have (for now), to ensure the delivery of the most important value first.

How does AgilePM ensure quality in projects?

Quality is an uncompromising principle in AgilePM. It is ensured through frequent testing, reviews, and involvement of end-users during each iteration, known as a Timebox.

What leadership styles should one have in an agile project?

Agile projects require a facilitating and coaching leadership style (Servant Leadership) from the Scrum Master/Team Leader, focusing on removing impediments for the team and protecting the iteration’s goals.

What are the 4 phases in an AgilePM project?

AgilePM projects typically follow a lifecycle consisting of 5 phases: Foundation, Exploration, Engineering, Deployment, and Post-Project.

What is the role of the Business Visionary in AgilePM?

The Business Visionary is the highest role at the Project Level and is responsible for defining the business goals and ensuring the project delivers expected value.

Which role handles the daily management of a development team?

The daily management of the team is handled by the Team Leader (equivalent to Scrum Master) in collaboration with the Technical Coordinator.

How is the Business Analyst role handled in AgilePM?

The Business Analyst is a defined and important role in AgilePM. This person is responsible for developing, maintaining, and ensuring the communication of requirements between the business and the development team.

What levels of management does AgilePM define?

AgilePM defines three levels of management: Project Level (Project Manager, Business Sponsor), Team Level (Team Leader, Solution Developers), and Technical Level (Technical Coordinator).

What is the definition of ‘Timebox’ in AgilePM?

A Timebox is a fixed period (typically 2-4 weeks) during which a set of prioritized tasks must be completed, and where the deadline is fixed while the scope is flexible (using MoSCoW).

What is a ‘Daily Stand-up’ in AgilePM?

A Daily Stand-up is a short, daily meeting (typically 15 minutes) where the team synchronizes, discusses progress, and identifies any impediments.

What is a ‘Prioritized Requirements List’?

It is a list of all known requirements for the project, prioritized using the MoSCoW technique, and used to manage the Timebox work.

How is risk handled in AgilePM?

Risk is managed continuously throughout the project, focusing on reducing uncertainty through iterations and ensuring that the most critical risks are addressed early in the project.

What is the biggest difference in leadership style from traditional to agile?

Agile leadership focuses on facilitating and granting autonomy to the team, in contrast to traditional ‘command and control’ leadership. The agile leader is a ‘Servant Leader’.

What is the primary focus in AgilePM that ensures value?

The primary focus is on the customer’s definition of value. This is ensured through continuous customer involvement and MoSCoW prioritization, ensuring that ‘Must have’ functionality is delivered first.

How is progress measured in an AgilePM project?

Progress is primarily measured using delivered and tested products at the end of each Timebox, as well as the overall ‘Evolutionary Development’ throughout the phases.

What is a ‘Solution Increment’?

A ‘Solution Increment’ is the sub-product or functionality that has been delivered, tested, and approved after a Timebox. It is part of the continuous, incremental development.

What is the role of the Technical Coordinator?

The Technical Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the project’s technical coherence and architecture, and assists the development team with technical decisions.

What is ‘Incremental Delivery’?

Incremental delivery means that the project is not delivered all at once at the end, but delivered in smaller, usable pieces (increments) throughout the project’s lifecycle. This ensures early value.

How does AgilePM Foundation differ from PRINCE2 Foundation?

PRINCE2 focuses on control, governance, and the project’s overall lifecycle. AgilePM focuses on team delivery, iterations, and the agile approach to development. They complement each other and can be integrated.

Can AgilePM be used in the public sector?

Yes, thanks to its structure and focus on governance and documentation, AgilePM is suitable for organizations in both the private and public sectors that require flexibility and control.

What is AgilePM’s view on documentation?

AgilePM recognizes the value of documentation but emphasizes that it should be ‘just enough’ and ‘just in time’ to support the project’s needs, without becoming a bureaucratic waste of time.

Which requirements are prioritized first in MoSCoW?

Requirements categorized as ‘Must Have’ (M) are always prioritized first, as they are essential for the solution to be considered a success.

How are changes (Change) handled in AgilePM?

Changes are accepted and are part of the process. They are handled using MoSCoW prioritization, where new requirements are swapped with existing ‘Should Have’ or ‘Could Have’ requirements to keep the Timebox deadline fixed.

What is the purpose of the ‘Project Review’ meeting?

The ‘Project Review’ meeting at the end of a phase is used to assess the project’s overall progress, lessons learned, and to make decisions about the next steps.

What is the logical next step certification after Foundation?

The logical next step is the AgilePM Practitioner, which teaches you how to apply and tailor the AgilePM method in complex and realistic project situations.

How is the business involved in the AgilePM process?

The business is closely involved through roles such as Business Sponsor, Business Visionary, and especially the Business Ambassador, who represents end-users and ensures continuous feedback.

What timeframe does the Foundation certification cover?

The Foundation certification covers the foundation and central concepts of the AgilePM method, including the 8 principles, processes, and roles.

What advantage does AgilePM provide regarding project governance?

AgilePM provides a structured governance framework designed to give management control and visibility over agile projects, while the team maintains the flexibility to perform the work.

How is ‘Quality’ defined in AgilePM?

Quality is defined as ‘just enough’ to meet business needs, and it is ensured by not compromising on time and budget. Quality is built incrementally through testing and reviews.

When is AgilePM not the best choice?

AgilePM is less suitable for projects where requirements are fixed and inflexible, and where the customer cannot or will not be involved in the ongoing development. It requires commitment from the business.

What is a ‘Facilitated Workshop’ in AgilePM?

It is an AgilePM technique used to gather stakeholders from different areas to make quick, collaborative decisions about the requirements or the solution.

What is the purpose of the ‘Deployment’ phase?

The ‘Deployment’ phase encompasses the activities necessary to roll out the finished product (the solution) to end-users and ensure it is adopted.

How is estimation handled in AgilePM?

Estimation in AgilePM is often based on relative sizing (e.g., using Planning Poker or other techniques) and acknowledges that early estimates are less accurate. The focus is on ‘just-in-time’ estimation.

What is AgilePM’s view on testing?

Testing is a continuous activity in AgilePM. The solution is tested continuously in each Timebox to build quality incrementally and reduce the risk of errors upon delivery.

Who is the DSDM Consortium?

The DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development Method) Consortium is the organization that originally developed the framework that later became AgilePM, and they are responsible for the continued refinement of the method.

What is the latest version of the AgilePM manual?

The latest version of the AgilePM manual, v3, was launched in 2024 and forms the basis for Mentorix’s e-learning.

What is ‘Evolutionary Development’?

It is the process of iteratively and incrementally developing the solution, where the product grows and evolves over time through repeated Timeboxes.

How is AgilePM estimation handled in a ‘Timebox’?

The estimation process in a ‘Timebox’ is fixed, but the scope is flexible. The team estimates the tasks but uses MoSCoW prioritization to ensure the most important functionality is delivered within the timeframe.

Why is close communication important in AgilePM?

Close, daily communication ensures that misunderstandings are minimized, problems are identified quickly, and the team and business are continuously synchronized regarding requirements and solution.

What is the purpose of the ‘Project Review’?

The purpose is to evaluate the delivered product/solution, document lessons learned, and make strategic decisions about the project’s further course or termination.

Can I use AgilePM for projects that are not software development?

Yes, AgilePM is a generic project management method. Although popular in software, it can be adapted to any project type requiring flexible and incremental delivery, such as marketing campaigns or organizational development.

What is the role of a ‘Solution Developer’?

Solution Developer is a collective term for the team members (developers, designers, testers) in the team building the product. They are responsible for the technical quality and delivering the agreed functionalities.

What is the role of the ‘Technical Coordinator’?

The Technical Coordinator ensures the technical governance, architecture, and quality of the solution, and acts as a link between the development team and technical management.
